Low Testosterone

Low Testosterone? Time to Fix It.

A low testosterone result is the beginning of a conversation, not an automatic prescription. Before deciding what to do, review why the test was ordered, how it was taken, whether it matches your symptoms, and what could explain the result.

Put the result in context

Bring the full laboratory report with its reference range and collection time. Tell the clinician about recent illness, sleep disruption, medicines, supplements, and any previous hormone use. A screenshot of one number rarely gives enough information for a meaningful decision.

Why might testing be repeated?

The Endocrine Society recommends confirming low testosterone with a repeat morning fasting measurement in men with compatible symptoms. The clinician should also investigate why testosterone is low, rather than treating an isolated number as the entire diagnosis.

Ask which tests are necessary for your situation and what each will help establish. More tests are not automatically better. Follow the ordering clinician’s preparation instructions, and do not stop medicines or take products intended to influence the result.

Discuss treatment and alternatives

If testosterone deficiency is confirmed, ask what benefit is realistic for your specific symptoms, what monitoring is needed, and which risks or medical conditions affect suitability. Discuss fertility goals early: they can change the choice of treatment. Correcting another contributor may also be part of the plan.

  • What diagnosis do these results support?
  • Could another condition explain the symptoms or laboratory findings?
  • What are the options, including observation or addressing another cause?
  • How will we judge benefit, monitor problems, and decide whether to continue?

Avoid choosing a target before the assessment

Aiming for a particular online “optimal” level is not a substitute for clinical reasoning. Your health history and response matter more than another person’s before-and-after story. Persistent symptoms should be reassessed even if a laboratory number changes.
