Erectile dysfunction can have more than one contributing cause. It is not always possible to place a man neatly into a single “type,” and a treatment that helps one person may not fit another. A useful assessment starts with your history, rather than a promise that one product finds the real cause for everyone.
Physical and psychological factors can overlap
The NIDDK describes an ED evaluation that considers medical, sexual, and mental-health history, a physical examination, and selected tests. Blood-vessel or nerve problems, medicines, hormone conditions, stress, and relationship factors can contribute in different combinations.
An erection problem does not automatically mean low testosterone. Likewise, a situational pattern or performance anxiety does not rule out a physical contributor. Describe what happens and let the assessment guide the next step.
Information that helps at the appointment
- When did the difficulty begin, and is it consistent or occasional?
- Is the main concern desire, getting an erection, keeping it, pain, or curvature?
- What medicines, supplements, alcohol, and nicotine do you use?
- What relevant health conditions, operations, or recent changes should the clinician know about?
- What have you tried, and what happened?
Choose treatment after reviewing suitability
Treatment may involve addressing a health condition, reviewing medication effects, counseling, or discussing an erection-specific treatment. An option can help erectile function without resolving every underlying contributor. Ongoing follow-up matters when benefits are limited or side effects occur.
If testosterone or another hormone treatment is proposed, ask which findings support that diagnosis. If an ED medicine is proposed, review interactions and instructions. Do not combine treatments or change prescribed medicines without discussing it with the relevant clinician.
